Four Californians Among Activists Kidnapped in Israel’s Interception of Global Sumud Flotilla

Videos of violence towards flotilla activists show brutal mistreatment of kidnapped participants.

On May 20, Israeli forces intercepted the remaining boats in the Global Sumud Flotilla. This marks the final confrontation between the flotilla’s peace activists attempting to deliver aid to Palestinians in Gaza, as the Israeli military continues enforcing a naval blockade and manufactured starvation.

The flotilla, which consisted of more than 50 boats and over 400 activists from dozens of countries, set sail toward Gaza from Spain, France, and Italy, earlier last month. Organizers and peace advocates stated that the purpose of the Global Sumud Flotilla was to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, while drawing international attention to the more than 19-year long siege imposed on Gaza’s population. The convoy consisted of people from a wide range of professional backgrounds from doctors, to journalists, to humanitarian activists, and more.

As the public has witnessed countless flotillas intercepted over the past year, activists have expressed the importance of civilian-led humanitarian efforts. International aid governance organizations have struggled to get supplies into Gaza due to interference from Israel, therefore underscoring the importance of independent aid campaigns. Many activists believe that civilian-led efforts are crucial in drawing international attention while pressuring governments and human rights groups to continue further investigations into ethnic cleansing and ensuring transparency of humanitarian operations in Gaza.

Prior to the Israeli military intercepting the last remaining boats, the Global Sumud Flotilla released a statement stating Israeli naval forces boarded and intercepted at least 40 vessels from the flotilla on international waters near Cyprus. Some of the 40 boats that were illegally intercepted included the vessels Cactus, Marilyn, and Jandabar. Once boats reached Cyprus, Israeli forces used live ammunition, firing on peaceful nonviolent activists in an attempt to forcibly make them surrender. Israeli officials defended their actions, claiming their reasoning for using live ammunition and brute force was due to the Flotilla’s intention to challenge Israeli security restrictions.

Chad, an LA resident and California native who was aboard one of the flotilla vessels, told Knock LA on May 22, “All boats have been abducted and the last was hit with water cannons and rammed. A bunch were sunk.”

As of today, all boats have been confirmed to be intercepted by Israel, as Israeli soldiers fired live shots and ammunition at peaceful unarmed activists, forcing them to surrender. The halt of the vessels sparked international criticism following Israel’s capture of multiple activists. Videos posted to social media showed Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir and other Israeli government officials humiliating and beating captured flotilla activists. Many flotilla members also claimed Israeli officials were sexually abusing many activists in captivity as well. Activists were seen being degraded on video, blindfolded with their hands tied behind their backs, being forced to listen to the Israeli national anthem, and ordered to say pro-Israel slogans.

Chad reflected on the videos of his detained comrades and told Knock LA, “ Good to know where they are, but really painful to watch.”

Extreme violence, sexual assault, and rape were reported as widespread occurrences by many flotilla activists after they were forcibly captured and taken to Israeli detention facilities.

“180 people aboard one detention vessel were bashed and beaten, with dozens suffering from broken ribs,” Lamont said, an Australian activist and filmmaker who was one of the many activists captured and detained by Israel. She also witnessed detainees being sexually assaulted, tased, beaten, and injected with unknown sedatives. According to Reuters, at least 15 flotilla activists have come forward with allegations of rape and sexual assault

Following their capture, hundreds of flotilla activists were deported back to Turkey. Flotilla activists were draped in keffiyehs as they returned to their launch point, greeted by other activists and supporters. Turkey recently condemned Israel’s interception of the flotilla, alongside many other European countries that have expressed concern regarding the abuse of the activists. The abuse of Global Sumud Flotilla participants is the latest instance in violent mistreatment of international peace advocates by Israel.

Many countries including Spain, Italy, and Germany condemned Israel’s treatment of their citizens, demanding answers and an explanation regarding the reasoning for the violent treatment of their citizens. The documented violence has also intensified the possibility of strains on diplomatic ties and relations between Israel and other countries.

As of May 21, Israel’s foreign minister has claimed that “all” flotilla activists have been deported back to their home countries, though many flotilla activists have yet to hear the whereabouts of several of their comrades still in Israel. Four Californians who were aboard the flotilla, were captured by Israel and taken to Ashdod detention center. Their names are Silas Beaver, Megan Dominguez, Kelly Riggle, and Greg Terry. Israel has yet to provide an update on their location and their current conditions.

Despite Israel’s interceptions of the Global Sumud Flotilla, many activists are heartened by the renewed attention focused on Gaza again. Despite constant interception, humanitarian efforts and missions are being planned for the near future as the next wave of direct action evolves.
