LA CAN’s General Dogon Rejects Meaningless Award From Mayor Garcetti
He spoke to the needs of Skid Row instead.
Mayor Eric Garcetti made a rare appearance in the city he’s mayor of on Monday, appearing at the unveiling of a half-dozen toilets in Skid Row to give and receive plaudits. One of those plaudits was a commondation for artist/activist General Dogon of LA CAN, who rejected the award.

Instead of participating in a meaningless photo-op, Dogon used the rare moment in which a local activist had an audience with our mayor to speak about conditions on Skid Row, and the city’s failure to live up to its promises to its most vulnerable residents. Watch the interaction below, and consider donating to LA CAN, who works on the frontlines to defend the rights of the city’s unhoused population in Skid Row.
